For the last several years, I’ve been an active member of an organization called Outdoor Mindset. Founded in 2010 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, its mission is to unite and empower people affected by neurological challenges through a common passion for the outdoors.
Local meet-up groups and an online community have helped members around the world connect and share their experiences as patients and caregivers. But unlike other communities of people facing similar challenges, the focus isn’t just on the disease. Members share a passion for the outdoors, whether it’s a love of hiking, biking, skiing or just relaxing on the beach.
Outdoor Mindset’s values are community, empowerment, humor and integrity. In a world that seems to focus so much on the negative, this organization adds a new dimension to living with a neurological challenge. It’s not about what you can’t do; it’s about what you can. Empowering each other to explore and enjoy the natural environment while keeping a sense of humor in difficult times may just be the best medicine any doctor could order. Over the next several months, I’ll be featuring the inspiring stories of other Outdoor Mindset members. If a love of the outdoors and an attitude of empowerment have helped you cope with a chronic illness of any kind, I would love to hear your story too!
